Container Shipping for International Log Cabin Dealers
For dealers operating outside continental Europe, container shipping is the primary logistics method for receiving timber structures from manufacturers. Understanding container specifications, shipping timelines, and documentation requirements enables dealers to plan inventory, quote customers accurately, and manage delivery expectations.
Container Types and Capacities
Log cabins and timber structures are shipped flat-packed in standard ISO containers. The two most common container types used are:
20ft Standard Container
- Internal dimensions: 5.9m x 2.35m x 2.39m (L x W x H)
- Payload capacity: approximately 21,700 kg
- Typical load: 1-3 small to medium cabins (up to ~25m2 each) depending on wall thickness
40ft High Cube Container
- Internal dimensions: 12.03m x 2.35m x 2.69m (L x W x H)
- Payload capacity: approximately 26,500 kg
- Typical load: 3-6 cabins or 1-2 large glulam structures (60-100m2+)
Eurodita optimises packing to maximise container utilisation, reducing per-unit shipping costs for dealers ordering multiple structures. Mixed loads combining different product types within a single container are available.
What makes up order-to-delivery, and who confirms each part
Total time from order to delivery is not one number held by one party. It is a chain of components, each confirmed by a different party at a different moment, and adding published figures together produces a date nobody has agreed to. What follows is the chain and who owns each link, so you know which question to put to whom.
Production: confirmed in the written quotation
Production timing varies by product, factory load, seasonality and project complexity, and glulam can vary particularly materially. Ask Eurodita, and expect the answer inside the written quotation for your specific specification rather than as a general statement.
EXW release at Kaunas: confirmed by your order terms and your payment
The default commercial delivery basis is EXW Kaunas unless the specific quotation or order states otherwise, and quoted prices exclude VAT and delivery. The balance of payment falls due before factory dispatch and loading, so the release point depends on your own payment position as well as on production.
Container booking and sailing: confirmed by the carrier
Eurodita does not operate its own transport fleet. Freight is arranged through third-party carrier and forwarder partners, is quoted separately, and is priced by route, load and order. The booking and the sailing date belong to the carrier, and the date is real only once the booking is placed.
Port-to-port transit: confirmed by the carrier
Transit is route-, carrier- and customs-specific, and the ETA is an estimate rather than a guarantee. It can be re-quoted, but it cannot be fixed by the factory.
Customs clearance and inland delivery: confirmed by your destination agent
For non-EU markets outside the UK, the normal arrangement is transport to the destination port rather than a universal door-delivery, customs-cleared commitment; anything broader is confirmed individually for the specific order. Import clearance and inland delivery therefore sit with your customs broker and your local transport, working from the shipment documentation.
At the site
Unloading at destination is the buyer’s or the site’s responsibility unless a specific written order or transport arrangement states otherwise. Forklift, telehandler, crane or other suitable equipment may be used depending on the load and the site; a forklift is not the only acceptable method.
Two questions answer most of this chain: what does my written quotation confirm, and what has my forwarder actually booked.
Documentation and Customs
Intra-EU Shipments
Shipments within the European Union require standard commercial documentation only. No customs declarations or duties apply. Eurodita provides commercial invoices, packing lists, and CMR transport documents.
Extra-EU Shipments
Exports outside the EU require additional documentation:
- Commercial invoice with HS codes for timber structures
- EUR.1 certificate (for preferential duty rates where applicable)
- Phytosanitary certificate, confirms timber heat treatment compliance (ISPM-15)
- Certificate of origin
- Bill of lading (sea freight) or CMR (road freight)
Eurodita prepares the agreed export and commercial documentation for the shipment. Dealers, importers or appointed forwarders remain responsible for import clearance, duties, local taxes and destination-specific compliance unless different delivered terms are agreed in writing for that order.
Cost Factors
Container shipping costs are influenced by several variables:
- Container size: a 40ft HC costs more than a 20ft but doubles capacity
- Route: established routes (Europe, UK) are significantly less expensive than long-haul destinations
- Season: Q4 shipping rates typically increase due to pre-holiday demand
- Fuel surcharges: variable, linked to bunker fuel indices
- Port charges: vary significantly between destination ports
Dealers shipping regularly benefit from consolidating orders to fill containers efficiently. Eurodita provides detailed packing plans that enable dealers to calculate container utilisation before ordering.
Insurance and Risk Management
Marine cargo insurance is strongly recommended for all container shipments. Eurodita ships on an EXW (Ex Works) basis from its Kaunas factory. Dealers should ensure their insurance covers the full replacement value of the shipment plus freight costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many log cabins fit in a shipping container?
A 20ft container typically holds 1-3 small to medium cabins (up to ~25m2 each). A 40ft high cube container holds 3-6 cabins or 1-2 large glulam structures. Actual capacity depends on wall thickness and design complexity. Eurodita provides packing plans to optimise container utilisation.
How long does shipping take from Lithuania to Australia?
Container shipping runs from Klaipeda port to Australian ports, with the sailing schedule and transit confirmed by the carrier at booking. Add production time, quoted separately for standard and bespoke orders, before shipping commences. Total order-to-delivery combines production and sea freight, and is stated for your specific product in the written quotation.
What documentation is needed for importing log cabins?
For extra-EU imports, documentation includes commercial invoice with HS codes, phytosanitary certificate (ISPM-15 compliance), certificate of origin, EUR.1 certificate where applicable, and bill of lading. Eurodita handles all export documentation. Dealers manage import clearance at their destination.
Does Eurodita handle shipping logistics?
Eurodita manages production, packing, export documentation, and loading. Shipping is available on EXW (Ex Works) terms from its Kaunas factory. Eurodita provides packing plans and shipping cost estimates to help dealers plan logistics and pricing.
Frequently asked questions
What are the delivery terms for a container order from Eurodita?
u003cpu003eThe default basis is EXW Kaunas; DAP can be quoted per order and DDP only case by case. Prices are in EUR excluding VAT and freight. Freight is arranged through third-party carriers and forwarders, quoted separately by route and load. Payment is 50% with the order and 50% before dispatch, and the balance must be settled before loading.u003c/pu003e
Does Eurodita arrange the shipping container and sea freight itself?
u003cpu003eEurodita runs no transport fleet. Container booking, sailing dates and port-to-port transit are handled by a carrier or forwarder, either the dealer’s own or one arranged as a separate quoted service. The booking and ETA belong to the carrier. Eurodita’s responsibility covers production, packing, loading and the agreed export documentation at Kaunas.u003c/pu003e
Who unloads the container at the destination site?
u003cpu003eUnloading at destination is the buyer’s or the site’s responsibility unless a written order or transport arrangement states otherwise. Kits ship flat packed, so a forklift, telehandler, crane or other equipment suited to the load and site may be used. Plan the equipment and site access before the container arrives, as handling at the receiving end sits with the dealer or importer.u003c/pu003e
Are shipping durations from Lithuania published for planning purposes?
u003cpu003eNo. Eurodita publishes no production or transit durations. Production timing for the specific order is stated in the written quotation, the sailing schedule and transit estimate come from the carrier at booking, and clearance and inland delivery timing come from the destination agent. Adding published figures together produces a date nobody has agreed to.u003c/pu003e
What export documents does Eurodita prepare for a non-EU shipment?
u003cpu003eThe agreed export documents for the order, which can include a commercial invoice with HS codes, packing list, certificate of origin, EUR.1 where applicable, ISPM-15 phytosanitary certificate and bill of lading or CMR. Which documents are included is confirmed at quotation. Import clearance, duties, local taxes and destination compliance remain with the dealer, importer or appointed forwarder.u003c/pu003e
