Maintain Your Log Cabin Year Round Checklist
Preventative maintenance for log homes can go a long way toward protecting against costly repairs. Regularly cleaning, staining and treating their wood can protect most from weather-related damages caused by insects and wear and tear.
At the start of spring, begin by performing an in-depth home check-up. Carefully examine logs for moisture stains, cracking or warping and address these immediately to avoid rot. Check for water leaks around areas like roof valleys, chimney and plumbing vents as well as in gutters to identify any blockages which lead to foundation water damage. Clean gutters and downspouts regularly so blockages don’t cause foundational water damage. Re-caulk windows and doors as necessary in order to improve energy efficiency as well as check roof shingles for damage; any worn roof shingles should be replaced ASAP to ensure fire safety in case there ever is damage or disruption of service. Finally inspect and clean out your chimney so as to create an efficient fire safe structure!
Summer maintenance should include performing a pressure wash to clear away dirt, mold and mildew buildup that damages wood surfaces, then re-staining or sealing to protect from harsh summer sun and prevent moisture infiltration. Also important are inspecting and re-caulking exterior trim as necessary to prevent leaks, as well as replacing or repairing window screens as required. Lastly, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors must also be regularly checked to make sure they’re working correctly.
If your log home is situated in a remote location, be sure to test its generator and inspect and stock emergency supplies. In addition, trim trees and bushes close by the house in order to reduce overgrowth and enhance air circulation.
