What exactly is a "Twin Skin" log cabin?
A Twin Skin cabin is built using two parallel walls of solid timber logs with a gap (cavity) in between them. At Eurodita, we manufacture these using either **44mm** or **58mm** thick logs for both the inner and outer walls. The cavity between these walls—available in **50mm** or **100mm** widths—is designed to be filled with insulation material (like rockwool or foam boards), creating a building with exceptional thermal retention properties comparable to modern timber frame houses.
Are the floor and roof also insulated?
We design the structure to be fully insulated. The roof and floor components in our Twin Skin kits are manufactured to be **"insulation-ready"**. This means the joists and rafters are spaced and structured to easily accommodate insulation material. Note that while we provide the timber structure and boards, the actual insulation material itself is not included in the kit, allowing you to source local materials that meet your specific regional building codes.
Can I choose the quality of the windows and doors?
Yes, we offer two distinct tiers to suit your project requirements. For standard use, our **Garden Type** double glazing (4-6-4mm) with 5-point locking doors is an excellent choice. However, for fully residential projects where maximum heat retention is required, we strongly recommend upgrading to our **Residential Euro 68** standard. These windows feature thicker frames, superior sealing, and high-performance 4-16-4mm glazing units.
Which cavity size should I choose: 50mm or 100mm?
This depends on your target climate and intended use. For most UK and Central European climates, a **50mm cavity** filled with high-quality insulation is sufficient for a comfortable home office. However, for Scandinavian climates or for buildings intended as permanent sleeping accommodation, we recommend the **100mm cavity**. This allows for a double layer of insulation, significantly boosting the U-value and energy efficiency of the building.
Is the assembly process different from a standard cabin?
The principle is similar (interlocking logs), but the process involves building two walls simultaneously. It is slightly more time-consuming than a single-skin cabin but straightforward for professional installers. The key difference is installing the insulation material and moisture membranes into the floor, roof, and wall cavities as the structure goes up.
